On Monday night the SFC Boys’ Lacrosse team lined up against Coastal League rival Bishops at SFC. A win by SFC and SFC would still be in the running for the Coastal League title. A second loss to Bishops would mean that Bishops would win the Coastal League. Recall that in the first meeting, Bishops won 4-3 in triple overtime. With a lot on the line, SFC played tough and walked away with a 7-6 victory to even the season series with Bishops and 1-1. The team is now 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the Coastal League. It was good to avenge the earlier loss to Bishops. Other than the triple overtime loss to Bishops, the team’s only losses were an 8-12 loss to St. Margaret’s which is ranked #5 in California and a 3-5 loss to Cathedral which is ranked #12 in the State.
The SFC offense took charge early against Bishops and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. Rylan Goodwin led the Eagles in scoring with 1 goal and 4 assists for a team high 5 points. Rylan was involved in 5 out of the 7 goals scored by SFC. Way to go Rylan. Brett Koopman added a goal and 2 assists for 3 points. Bobby Berg scored 2 goals. Also scoring goals were Brendon DeBont, Trey Adcox, and Isaac Matsumoto.
Just as they have all season, the SFC defense played tough, including pitching a shut out in the first quarter. Bishops roared back in the second quarter taking 13 shots and scoring 4 goals. The 13 shots were more shots than the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarters combined. The defense buckled down in the 3rd and 4th quarters allowing only 1 goal in each quarter. The team caused 8 turnovers with Brendon DeBont and Brett Koopman leading the way with each causing 2 turnovers. Nicholas Kavanaugh, Sam Cooper, Rylan Goodwin and Evan Bennet also caused turnovers. Sam Cooper saved 9 out of 15 shots on goal (60%). DJ Tovtin, Bert Carnes and Aaron Bolt rounded out the defensive effort and Brett Koopman won 8 out of 12 faceoffs (67%).
The Eagles’ next game is at Francis Parker on Thursday, May 13th. Game time is 4:30pm. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by to cheer on the team.
Go Eagles!
