On a sunny Saturday afternoon at Santa Fe Christian the Boys’ Lacrosse team played a defensive battle against the Cathedral Catholic Dons. The final score was 3-5. The team is now 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the Coastal League.
The Eagles knew they were going up against a strong opponent since Cathedral came into the game ranked #3 in the county. Cathedral had already beaten the #2 team (La Costa Canyon), the #4 team (San Marcos) and the #6 team (Poway). Cathedral’s only loss was to Torrey Pines, the #1 ranked team in the county.
The SFC defense led the way again shutting down a powerful Cathedral offense and limiting the Dons to only 5 goals, including 0 goals in the 4th quarter. Only Torrey Pines has held Cathedral to fewer goals (4) in a game. Sam Cooper was awesome at goalie facing 42 shots, including 28 shots on goal. Sam saved 23 of those 28 shots (82%). Someone will need to look to see if that is a school record. Brett Koopman caused 5 turnovers and DJ Tovtin caused 2. Brett and DJ also took faceoffs for the Eagles. Each of Nicolas Kavanaugh and Ryland Goodwin also caused a turnover.
On the offensive side of the field, Bobby Berg, Brendon DeBont and Rylan Goodwin each had a goal and Brendon also added an assist.
The Eagles’ next game is a home game against Coastal League rival Bishops. The game is on Monday, May 10th at 5:00pm. In the prior meeting this season, Bishops won 4-3 in triple overtime. With a win over Bishops SFC still has a chance to either win the Coastal League title or share the Coastal League title with Bishops. If SFC wins the game on Monday and both team win their remaining Coastal League games, then they will share the Coastal League title. If SFC beats Bishops on Monday and wins its remaining Coastal League games and Bishops loses to La Jolla Country Day in their last game of the year, then SFC will be the Coastal League champions. Bishops only beat La Jolla Country Day 9-6 earlier in the season.
Please stop by to cheer on the team.
Go Eagles!
