On Thursday night the SFC Eagles Boys’ Lacrosse team traveled to La Jolla to face off against the La Jolla High School Vikings. The Eagles entered the game with a record of 4-2 and the Viking had a record of 3-3, including a 9-7 win over Bishops. SFC was ranked 7th in the county and La Jolla was ranked 9th. A battle of Top 10 teams. It was an important game for the Eagles.
The boys started fast and strong and jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. They kept the pressure on for the balance of the game logging a 10-3 win. The team is now 5-2 and jumped one spot in the San Diego County rankings to #6 in the County.
Six different Eagles scored goals. Rylan Goodwin led the way with 3 goals (a hat trick). Bobby Berg and Colton Lehberg each added 2 goals. Brendon DeBont, Brett Koopman and Isaac Matsumoto each had a goal. Brendon led the team with 3 assists and a total of 4 points. And, 6 of the 10 goals were assisted goals so the boys were really working together as a team on the offensive end of the field.
The defense once again had a stellar performance limiting the Vikings to 3 goals. Brett Koopman caused 2 turnovers, including stripping the ball 3 times from two different La Jolla players in the same sequence. Also causing turnovers were Nicholas Kavanagh, Brendon DeBont, and Aaron Bolt. DJ Tovtin and Evan Bennet were all over the field playing aggressive defense. The Eagles picked up a season high 50 ground balls, led by Colton Lehberg (14) and Brendon DeBont (10).
Sam Cooper was stellar in goal saving 9 of 12 shots on goal (75%) and Colton Lehberg won 19 of 22 face-offs (86%).
The keys to victory: Winning ground balls (50), sharing the ball on offense (6 assists), saving goals (75%), winning face-offs (86%), causing turnovers (5), and having 8 different players taking shots. Great team effort.
The Eagles’ next game is Monday, May 3rd at Pacific Ridge at 3:30pm. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by to cheer on the team.
Go Eagles!
