Tuesday night, our Santa Fe Christian Men’s Lacrosse team beat the Poway Titans by a score of 8-6. SFC’s record midway through the season is now 8-2 and 3-0 in the Coastal League. The team is ranked 6th in San Diego County with a rating of 82.21 and only 0.18 points out of 3rd place.
Early in the first period, the Eagles were dominant and took a 2-0 lead. It looked like SFC would be able to control the game. However, the Titans had other plans and scored 2 goals to even the score at the end of the first period. The Titans added another 3 goals in the 2nd quarter while shutting out the Eagles in the second period. Poway scored 5 unanswered goals in the 1st and 2nd quarters. It was only the third time in 30 quarters that the Eagles offense had been shutout in a quarter.
The second half was a different story with the Eagles taking control scoring 4 goals in the 3rd quarter while shutting out the Titans. SFC also outscored the Titans in the 4th quarter 2-1. So, after being down 5-2 at the half the Eagles scored 6 unanswered goals before the Titans added a goal toward the end of the game. Great defensive effort by the Eagles in the second half.
Leading the scoring for the Eagles were Seniors Brendon De Bont with 2 goals and 3 assists (5 points), Colton Lehberg (3 goals) and Bobby Berg with 1 goal and 1 assist (2 points). Rounding out the scoring for SFC were Parker Guiltinan (Freshman) with 1 goal and 1 assist (2 points) and Rylan Goodwin (Senior) with 1 goal.
Special congratulations to Brendon De Bont for reached 100 career points (goals + assists) for SFC. Brendon has 103 career points and with at least 10 more games to be played in the 2022 season he is poised to add to his career point total. Way to go Brendon.
The SFC defense kept the Titans in check allowing only 27 shots and Sam Cooper (Senior) saving 12 out of 18 shots on goal (67%). Leading the defense was DJ Tovtin (Senior) with 2 caused turnovers and Ben Wakeham (Freshman) with 1 caused turnover. The Eagles also won the ground ball battle collecting 25 ground balls compared to Poway’s 13. Our prayers go out to Evan Bennett (Senior) who injured his shoulder in the game.
Special congratulations to Sam Cooper who now, with his 12 saves against Poway, has 445 career saves and passes Grant Koopman (SFC class of 2018) who had 435 career saves. Grant plays D1 NCAA lacrosse for Robert Morris and Sam is heading to Dartmouth, also a D1 team, to play goalie for The Big Green. Dartmouth, an Ivy League school, was established in 1769 and it is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. I wonder if Sam knows all of that.
The next game for the Eagles is Monday, April 18th against the La Jolla Vikings at SFC at 5:00pm.
Go Eagles.
