The Eagles headed out to San Dieguito Academy on Saturday for a non-league game. The game was a back and forth battle that SDA came out on top of 9 – 8. SFC is now 16- 3- 1 on the season with two key league games coming up in their final week of play. SDA is still fighting for a play-off spot and will need to win their last few games to make post season play.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead in the first when Maddie Binnie hit a two out double. Torin Bennett came up next and drove a triple to left center scoring Binnie. The Eagles held the lead until the bottom of the third when Hannah Barker drew a one out walk. Chloe Reese doubled home Barker and later scored on a wild pitch. At the end of three the Mustangs had a 2 -1 lead.
SDA picked up another run in the fourth picking up doubles from Lilly Besemer and Sarah Pruett. The Eagles responded in the top of the fifth. Maya Tyszkiewicz led off with a single and scored on Binnie’s second double of the game. Bennett and Aspen Lee hit back-to-back singles bringing in two more runs. Lee would score on a wild pitch and the Eagles had 5 – 3 lead. SDA would pick up one run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to cut the lead to one run.
The Eagles created a run in the top of the sixth when Binnie drew a two out walk and Bennett reached on an error. Having runners on first and third Bennett stole second and Binnie scored when they threw through and didn’t catch Bennett.
In the bottom half of the stanza the Mustangs got going again. The Mustangs had one runner on and Pruett singled and Barker singled bringing home one run. With the bases loaded and one out the Eagles limited the damage with two great defensive plays. The first came on a foul pop down the first base line where Binnie and catcher Kayla Emond both went full speed for the ball and collided with Emond amazingly holding on to the ball. The SDA runner on third tagged and scored. With runners in scoring position and two outs the next batter Emilia Adams hit a fly ball that left fielder Siena Porcelli made a great catch on to end the inning. At the end of six the score was tied 6- 6.
SFC opened the inning with Emond driving a double to left, her third hit of a three for three day at the plate. Samantha Kim walked and Emond moved to third. Peyton McKenna then drove in Emond on a fielder’s choice moving Kim to third. Kim then scored on a wild pitch. SFC had an 8 – 6 lead going to the bottom of the seventh. The Mustangs first batter, Kegan Herceg reached on an error. Then with one out Besemer singled putting runners on the corners. Herceg scored on an error. Pruett then reached on an error and the bases were loaded. The next batter, Barker delivered her second hit of the game and the win for the Mustangs.
For Bennett it was only her second loss of the year. She continued to add to her strike out total setting down seven Mustangs while walking four. Bennett now has 95 Ks this season in 60 innings of work. At the plate, Binnie had two doubles and Emond had a three for three day with a double. Kim reached base on all three of her at bats and led the team with two of the Eagles five stolen bases. The team crossed over 100 stolen base mark in the game with 103 this season.
