Eagles extend their win streak with BIG win against a crosstown rival - full team effort secures second-half comeback
The SFC Eagles Men's LAX team headed into Saturday's game riding a 4-game win streak and were hungry to keep it going against a team they'd never beaten before. Cathedral Catholic (Dons) came with a 4-4 record and ranked within the top 5 teams in the San Diego section. The Dons have three Div-1 commits leading their program and looked to post a win after recent losses vs. La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines.
The Dons started strong and went up 2-0 early over the Eagles. But the Eagles battled back to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was back and forth in the second, but the Eagles then found themselves down at the half, 7-9.
Your Eagles came out ready to go in the third and never looked back. The defense stepped it up a notch and didn't allow a single goal for the rest of the game - the entire unit played amazing and between the nets, George Adams (Jr) made several great saves to keep the Dons off the second-half scoreboard.
Here are some individual standouts:
- Magnus Falkeiwicz (Jr, Att) shot 3 for 3 and added 2 assists to lead the team with 5 points;
- Brady Berg (Fr, Mid) played like a seasoned veteran with an amazing all-around performance! 2 goals, 2 assists, 2 GB's, and 5 CTO's;
- Johnny Grimstad (Jr., Def) led the team in GB's with 4;
- The offense was well-balanced, with many contributing to the overall win:
- Will McGuiness (Jr, Mid) had a breakout game with 2 goals and 1 assist;
- Matt McKewon (Jr, Att) had two points 1 goal and 1 assist;
- Colby Rossettie (So, Att) had 2 goals and 2 assists;
- Parker Guiltinan (Jr., Att) netted 4 goals.
- Will McGuiness (Jr, Mid) had a breakout game with 2 goals and 1 assist;
Additionally, key play by Dylan Kelleher (Jr. FO), particularly in the second half, as he helped to neutralize Cathedral's standout FOGO (an Ohio St. commit), as well as solid play all over the field from Chase Woolley (Fr, Mid), and PJ Rogers (Jr, Mid) who both proved to be a nuisance for the Dons. Joe Miles (Jr, Def), Johnny Grimstad (Jr, Def), and Ben Wakeham (Jr, Def) all stepped up the defense to keep the Dons from scoring after the half!
Overall, this is a huge victory for the SFC Men’s lacrosse program. There's a lot to be excited about - this team has no seniors, a strong roster of seasoned Juniors, and a full complement of talented underclassmen. The future is bright for the Eagles, and Coach Tomas expects this team to continue to improve as the year goes on. There's a good chance that we will see this Don’s team again in the playoffs.
