Our Santa Fe Christian Eagles beat the Classical Academy Caimans last night at Del Norte High School for their 7th win of the season by a score of 45-14. The Eagles remain undefeated and are now 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Coastal League. The Eagles’ two most important Coastal League games will be played over the next two weeks. The first is against La Jolla Country Day (2-1 in the Coastal League) and the second against Orange Glen (3-0 in the Coastal League). These games will determine who wins the Coastal League.
Huge shout out to the SFC defense for shutting down the Caimans’ offense and not allowing them to score on the offensive side of the ball. While the Caiman’s scored 14 points, those were earned by the Caiman defense with two touchdowns off two turnovers by the Eagles. The first came in the second quarter on a fluke pass interception returned for a touchdown. The second Caiman came in the fourth quarter on a fumble recovery that was scooped up by a defender who ran 60 yards for a touchdown.
The Eagles’ defense was led by Chase Wetzel with a team leading 6 tackles, including 3 quarterback sacks. Wetzel also caused a safety resulting in 2 points for the Eagles. Luke Heggie and Luca Torti each had 5 tackles, with Heggie racking of 3.5 quarterback sacks. Bert Carnes added 4 tackles and a sack. Great job defense.
On the offensive side of by the ball the Eagles racked up 363 yards of offense. Brendon DeBont and Dante Rotchford went‑off having their best offensive games of the season. DeBont was on the receiving end of 3 of passes for a total of 85 yards (an amazing 28.3 yards per catch) and a touchdown. Nobody had more catches or more all-purpose yards than DeBont. Rotchford added 83 rushing yards for the Eagles on 4 carries for an average of more than 20 yards per run. Way to go Brendon and Dante!
Thomas Greupner had 148 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, including a 50-yard strike to Zack Marshall and a 36‑yard TD pass to DeBont. Luca Torti added 2 rushing touchdowns on the night.
The “Talon Shoutouts” this week go to:
The Defense (not allowing the Caiman offense to score)
Chase Wetzel (team leading 6 tackles, 3 sacks, and a safety)
Luke Heggie (5 tackles and 3.5 sacks)
Brendon DeBont (3 catches for 85 yards to lead the team in receptions and receiving yards, and a TD)
Dante Rotchford (83 rushing yards to lead the team in rushing, and some crushing tackles and blocks)
The next game for SFC is against La Jolla Country Day at LJCD on Friday night (10/15) at 7:00pm. In order to tally a win against LJCD the SFC defense will need to contain the Torreys’ quarterback, Garrett Bass-Sulpizio who is leading the Coastal League in passing with over 1,800 yards and 22 passing TDs and the SFC offense will need to avoid turnovers and control the game like they did against the Team Out East.
Lets Go Eagles!
