Azusa Pacific men's basketball has signed Hayden Gray and Trevan Martin, both of Santa Fe Christian, head coach Peter Bond announced this week. At Santa Fe Christian, Gray and Martin played for a coaching staff that includes former Cougar point guard Justin Byrd (2016-18).
"These two bring a strong connection to our program as they have played together both at Sante Fe and for the same travel ball (Gamepoint) program," said Bond, "Playing in hundreds of games and practices together builds a strong chemistry. When watching them on the court together, it is obvious they know one another really well and play to the other's strengths. We are excited to get to see that chemistry in a Cougar uniform!"
With Gray and Martin, Sante Fe Christian won two CIF Championships (2017-18 & 2019-20), and the school made its first Open Division playoff appearance in 2018-19.
Gray, a 6'3" point guard, was an All-Coast League First Team and All-CIF San Diego Second Team selection as a junior in 2019-20. "Hayden is a point guard with good size, and he reads the game well and can stretch the floor with his shooting ability," said Bond, "He has been coached well and has learned what it takes to win. We are thrilled to have Hayden as he will be a great fit into our team's culture and the broader Azusa Pacific community."

Martin, a 6'5" wing player, was a four-year varsity player. Heading into 2021, he was ranked #19 by Prep Hoops So Cal, even though he was forced to miss his entire junior season due to an injury. "Trevan is a physical, athletic wing who attacks the rim hard and is tough in transition, and will be able to guard multiple positions. I love how hard he plays, which is very much a skill in today's game. He has benefited from having great coaches who have played at this level, and this will give him a big advantage moving forward."

Azusa Pacific is coming off of a shortened 2020-21 season, in which the Cougars finished 5-7 and third in the Southern California Pod. The Cougars are expected to return 12 next season, laying the foundation for an experienced group to bounce back in 2021-22.
