The Santa Fe Christian Boys’ Lacrosse Team won its season opener on Saturday against the Valley Center Jaguars. The game was played at SFC. An 11-goal first half helped vault the team to an impressive 16-3 win. Seven different players scored for the Eagles. Colton Lehberg started the scoring 7 seconds into the game with a goal after he won the game’s first face-off. Brendon DeBont led the Eagles with a team high ten points -- three goals and seven assists. Bobby Berg had the most goals with four and he added three assists for a total of seven points. Brett Koopman added three goals and an assist tallying four points. Also adding goals were Rylan Goodwin (2), Trey Adcox (1) and Matt Briggs (1). The offense had four extra-man opportunities and scored on each. The team took 32 shots on goal. Overall, an impressive offensive performance for the first game of the season.
Defensively the Eagles were stout with constant pressure on the Jaguars causing multiple turnovers. DJ Tovtin, Joey Olmore, Brett Koopman and Sam Cooper led the defense. The Eagles picked up 42 ground balls led by Colton Lehberg (21) and Brett Koopman (5).
Every member of the team played in the game. Unfortunately, Evan Bennett and Rex Maloni were sidelined with injuries but came out to cheer on their teammates.
Special congratulations to new Head Coach Dan Carson and his coaching staff on their first victory. Coach Carson awarded game balls to Brendon DeBont, Brett Koopman and Colton Lehberg.
The Eagles’ next game is Tuesday, April 6th at St. Margaret’s.
