The Eagles of Santa Fe Christian soared to a week one win on Friday, beating the Christian Patriots on the field of Granite Hills 28-20.
Santa Fe opened the game with an 11-play drive that saw them try to establish the run in the early going. But after quarterback Kian Hogan failed to convert on a 4th and long carry, the Eagles turned the ball over to the Patriots.
Santa Fe’s offense would not be on the sidelines long, however, as Christian went three and out on their first series. The ensuing nine-play drive for the Eagles would result in a score, as Stephen Britton would plunge it in from two yards out. A blocked PAT gave SFC the 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
Britton would score again in the second, this time from four yards away, to increase the lead to 13-0. The next drive for Christian would also be successful, when Patriots quarterback Gabe Krug scored on a one-yard keeper to get his side on the board. Santa Fe Christian would hold that 13-7 lead going to the break.
A Jack Winters 22-yard touchdown run would be the lone score of the third quarter, as the Eagles took a 20-7 lead into the final frame.
Christian would get back to within six points on the strength of a Nate Stine 2-yard touchdown plunge in the fourth, but the next Eagles possession would prove to be the defining drive of the game.
Facing a 4th and 7 on the Patriots 36, Santa Fe’s Blake Weeks would scurry around the left side of the line and down the sidelines for a touchdown, making the score 28-14 Eagles.
Christian’s Christian Salacup would return the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a score, but following a failed onside kick, Santa Fe Christian was able to close out the win.
The Eagles (1-0) hit the road again next Friday to take on Francis Parker, while the Patriots (0-1) head north to Richmond to face the De Anza Dons.
