Our Santa Fe Christian Men’s Lacrosse team played 3 games in the last 3 days. Remarkable. The Eagles beat Pacific Ridge on Thursday by a score of 16-6. On Friday night, the SFC played Grossmont, the #3 ranked team in San Diego County and lost by one goal 7-8. On Saturday the boys played the #1 team in the State of California, St. Margaret’s, and lost a close game 5-7.
SFC’s record is now 11-4 and 4-0 in the Coastal League. According to LaxNumbers, going into the St. Margaret’s game the Eagles were ranked 4th in San Diego County.
In the game against Pacific Ridge, SFC dominated from the open whistle. Bobby Berg (Senior) had 5 goals and 4 assists (9 points) with one goal being assisted by his younger brother Alex Berg (Freshman). Colton Lehberg (Senior) had 3 goals and 1 assist (4 points). Seniors Brendon De Bont and Rylan Goodwin each had 2 goals and 1 assist (3 points). A pair of Freshman, Will McGuiness and Matt McKewon, each logged their first varsity goals for SFC. Way to go Will and Matt.
At Grossmont on Friday night, it was a game of 2 halves. Grossmont won the first half by a score of 5-2 and SFC won the second half 5-3. The Eagle had a couple of chances in the second half, but fell just short, with Grossmont winning the game 8-7. Sam Cooper (Senior) had the game of the season protecting the goal. He had 19 saves on 27 shots on goal, a 70% save rate. Bobby Berg delivered 5 goals and 1 assist (6 points). Colton Lehberg had 3 assists and Brendon De Bont had a goal and an assist. Magnus Falkiewicz rounded out the scoring with a goal. The SFC defense rose to the occasion limiting Grossmont to only 8 goals. Grossmont had been averaging almost 15 goals per game prior to taking the field against a stout SFC defense. Grossmont is currently ranked #3 in San Diego County behind Torrey Pines (#1) and Bishops (#2).
On Saturday, less than 18 hours after the end of the Grossmont Game, the Eagles suited up against the St. Margaret’s Episcopal Tartans from San Juan Capistrano. The Tartans are the #1 ranked team in the State of California. The SFC defense led the way again by holding the Tartans’ to only 7 goals, the fewest number of goals scored by the Tartans in any game this season. St. Margaret’s was averaging over 15 points per game prior to the game against the Eagles. In addition, St. Margaret’s was coming off a big win over Torrey Pines earlier in the week by a score of 14-7. SFC definitely held its own against the Tartans. Senior’s Bobby Berg (4 goals), Brendon De Bont (1 goal and 1 assist) and Colton Lehberg (1 assist) led the offense for SFC. Sam Cooper was rock solid in the goal saving over 60% of the shots on goal that he faced.
The next game for the Eagles is Tuesday, April 26th at SFC against Coastal League rival La Jolla Country Day. The game will start at 3:15 and will be followed by Senior Night celebrating the 10 seniors on the team.
