Women’s Water Polo gets off to fast start at San Diego Open.
The team continued its busy week by kicking off play with two games in the San Diego Open Tournament. The Lady Eagles got off to a fast start with a convincing win against Olympian by a score of 18-2. The SFC squad used its superior speed to produce many counter-attacks to jump out to a commanding lead and never looked back. Leading the scoring were two freshman players- Revere Schmidt had five goals while Niyah Pistone added four. Other goal scorers were Mylin Bennett with three, Aliyah Larson and Gisselle Fenby with two, and single goals by Olivia Davis, Ryan Rodriguez and Morgan Day. On defense, the Eagles were quick to the ball with lots of steals. Revere Schmidt had six steals, Mylin Bennet had four and Olivia Davis had three. Gisselle Fenby had a field block. The goalkeeping was strong with Charlotte Adams making two saves and allowed no goals while adding an assist. Annie Marx played the first half and made three save and added an assist.
In the second pool play game, the Lady Eagles faced off against the host team and Division I foe West Hills. SFC came away with a solid 11-5 win over the Wolfpack. The team used its speed and movement to draw the West Hills players into foul trouble early to take control of the game. Kylie Kennard played tough in the set position drawing six exclusions that led to the big Eagle advantage. The Eagles were led by Mylin Bennett with five goals, three steals and a field block on defense. Revere Schmidt scored four times while also making three steals and a field block. Revere also won the sprint at the start of all four quarters. Gisselle Fenby added two goals, two steals, and a field block. Morgan Day played strong and had two assists and a steal. Ryan Rodriguez played strong while drawing two exclusions and making a steal. The goalkeeping was solid with Charlotte Adams making four saves and Annie Marx making three.
The two wins in the first round of the tournament are big for the Lady Eagles. The team now plays in the championship bracket where they will face other top teams as it prepares for the CIF tournament in February. The Eagles face Santana Friday (1/31) at 4:20 pm at West Hills HS.
