Jack Haferkamp is the college prospect, the player pro scouts are looking at.Connor Sawyer is the leadoff man, the player who makes things happen for the Santa Fe Christian High School baseball team. But the story through the season’s first six games is senior right-hander Will Marenghi.
He allowed an unearned run against Oceanside in his first outing of the season. He blanked San Dieguito Academy over five innings, striking out 11. And Tuesday, in a 4-0 win over San Pasqual, Marenghi threw a two-hit shutout, walked one and fanned seven, bringing his record to 3-0 while his ERA stayed at 0.00.
With a fastball that sits at 86-88 mph, a sinker and a developing splitter, Marenghi has struck out 25 and walked just four in 18 innings this season. In a 99-pitch, 61-strike performance against San Pasqual, Marenghi said he threw “maybe five splitters.”His strikeout pitch was his curve.
“It’s a straight curve, nothing fancy, but I throw it from a lower arm slot, so I get pretty good movement,” Marenghi said. Told that he got 11 ground-ball outs, he said “that’s more than normal, probably because of my sinker.” “You don’t get 11 ground-ball outs without a great infield,” he said. “And I have a great infield.”
Santa Fe Christian (4-2) scored two runs in the first inning. Sawyer started the game with a single, stole second base and scored on Lee Davis’ single. Kyle Plasman then doubled home Davis. In the fifth, SFC put the game away, scoring twice more with Jaxon Scheibe starting things with a one-out single. Sawyer followed with a single and Haferkamp singled in Scheibe.
Davis’ infield grounder scored Sawyer. “My job is to set things up, get on base,” Sawyer said. “My approach is to load, get my timing and think center of the diamond.” He finished the game with three hits, two runs scored and three steals.
The only time San Pasqual (1-5) got him was on a line-drive double play. Haferkamp, SFC’s center fielder, has signed to play at UC Santa Barbara. He’s considered one of the county’s top pro prospects. Off to a slow start, he had two hits Tuesday to move his batting average to .278. “Yes, it has been a slow start, certainly not ideal,” Hafterkamp said. “It has been a little frustrating, but I’m not pressing. I’m playing freely and will get things rolling.”
Santa Fe Christian’s team traveled to the Dominican Republic for 10 days just before the season. Haferkamp got sick on the trip, didn’t play and didn’t even take batting practice. “So I’m a little behind,” he said. “Once the weather turns nice and we start playing consistently, things will get better.”
Things couldn’t get much worse for San Pasqual. The Eagles have scored just six runs in six games, losing to Bishop’s, No. 6 ranked Patrick Henry, No. 5 Torrey Pines, Mira Mesa and now SFC. “We’ll get it going,” said San Pasqual coach Justin Graeber. “We’ve pitched well, played good defense. We just aren’t scoring.”
The Eagles had a golden chance in the sixth inning. With runners on first and third and two out, Nic Halouchits hit a rocket that appeared headed to the left-field corner. But third baseman Kim Lohse made a nice backhand catch to rob Halouchits.
“If that ball gets down, it’s probably 4-2, we’re back in the game, and our bench comes alive,” Graeber said. “Our schedule has been front-loaded, and it hasn’t happened for us yet. But it will.”
