Team digs deep to come back from a 5 goal deficit at halftime to tie things up and send the match into overtime before ultimately giving up the golden goal to end the game
Riding high following their history-making win at Cathedral Catholic, the SFC Men's Lacrosse team came into its home game ready to extend their win streak vs. the visiting Warriors of Arapahoe (CO). After an initial defensive battle on both sides, the visitors broke through, scoring quickly and often, leaving the Eagles down 0-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The boys battled back during the second quarter, closing the gap several times. However, the Warriors continued to find ways to move through our defense and score, ultimately heading into half-time still leading the Eagles by 5 goals, 9-4.
The half-time break proved to be what the Eagles needed to make adjustments and battle back. In seasons past, the 3rd quarter has proven to be a challenge for our team, but not this time! Dylan Kelleher (So, FOGO) got things going for the Eagles by winning the opening faceoff of the quarter, taking the ball down the field, taking the shot, and scoring! Arapahoe answered with 2 quick goals in succession, but then the Eagles took over and didn't look back. Goals by Brady Berg (Fr, Midfield), Chase Woolley (Fr, LSM), Parker Guiltinan (Jr, Attack), Colby Rossettie (So, Attack), and two from Matt McKewon (Jr, Attack), PLUS lockdown defense by our key quartet of juniors Ben Wakeham (Jr, Defense), Johnny Grimstad (Jr, Defense), Mikey Adcox (Jr, Defense), and George Adams (Jr, Goalie) pulled the Eagles even and the third quarter ended with the teams locked at 11-11!
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle with the teams trading goals to start. The Eagles pulled ahead by 2 with a few minutes to go, but Arapahoe was able to scrap their way back and netted a couple to end the quarter tied again, 14-14.
In overtime, Arapahoe won the faceoff and took the first shot, but a stellar save by George Adams put the ball back in the Eagles sticks. Following a timeout, the Eagles controlled the ball to set up a final shot, but an errant pass gave it to the Warriors, who capitalized and scored the final goal to end the game - handing the Eagles the loss with a score of 14-15.
Despite the outcome, the team played a solid game, demonstrating grit and determination to battle back several times from multiple goals down. Once again, our boys demonstrated solid team play, recognizing that their efforts together would lead to better outcomes than any one player trying to do it on their own! There's still a lot of lacrosse to play, and these boys are ready to go with some big games upcoming. Come on out and cheer on your Eagles!
